- There are better role models than "Bertie". Some of my role models have been people who have led a Self-Help Group( maintain your recovery by helping others) that I attended post therapy. Another source of role models have been other stutterers I met on speech therapy groups. One of them took me out on the streets demonstrating how he made made conversations with 100 people in a hour while managing his stuttering. It makes you realise your limiting beliefs, inspires and encourages.
- Like Bertie, my experiences with so called speech mechanism improvement techniques made me very sceptical of visiting my first speech therapist. My mother had to take the initiative to take the appointment and push me into it. I tried speaking with marbles in my mouth, a spoon above my tongue. I also tried some ayurvedic root herb which made my tongue salivate due to its astringent nature. It was disappointing trying out things being advised and pushed by others and getting nowhere. - The opening scene when the Duke reads out his fathers address in front of an audience reminded me of the emotions of speaking in front of a large unknown audience. The audience reaction from discomfort, pity, impatience, humour generates negative emotions fear, avoidance, guilt inside me. Supportive audience reaction like patience, smile, encouragement helps. - Like Bertie I have great regard for a speech therapist I encountered. He did not promise me a cure. However, I realised later that he was like a life coach to me teaching me about fear, frustration, anger, inspiration, determination along with the known speech techniques at the time. - I liked the acting performances of Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. I think the film lacked the punch of other films based on personal stories that I have seen like In Pursuit of Happyness, Beautiful Mind, Forest Gump. There could have been more emphasis on the Duke/Kings personal struggle to overcome his emotions. The King never overcame anything humongous which - I guess is the story for most stammerers. - The supportive( active/passive ) role of others in the Kings life. Nobody achieves any success alone. In the Kings case it was his wife, speech therapist, maybe others(Churchill) who were there supporting him. - The dukes elder brother looked younger than him!
PS: this movie shows what creativity an actor, director, screenplay writer can show with the subject of stammering. Shreyas Talpade claimed the suit on Golmaal3 would curtail his acting creativity- how surprising! |
