The problem of stuttering is one of the very few problems faced by children. Stuttering is a speech disorder which causes non-fluency in speech by prolonging the utterance of certain words or syllables. Though this problem is known to be existent in all age groups, it is the younger lot who suffer more than older people. It has been observed over the years that children in the age group of 3 - 10 years seem to suffer more from stuttering than adults. There has been no concrete proof as to what causes this condition and what the prescribed methods to overcome it are. But it can be overcome with proper care and attention and also with the involvement of the parents and teachers of the children.

Since this stuttering condition involves hindrance in speech, this may be a setback for growing children, especially those in the secondary school group age. It is in this age that the children tend to engage in numerous activities and involve themselves in learning new things and hence there must not be any obstacle during this period. When a child belonging to secondary school stutters, he/she not only has to undergo the difficulties of the stuttering condition but is also bullied and ridiculed by fellow students.

At this age social acceptance is important to a child and hence the ridiculing and bullying may cause the child to reserve into a cocoon and not express his/her views. This may hinder the overall development of the child during the growing years thus preventing him/her from exploiting his/her talents. The child may grow up to be an introvert without being able to communicate well.

All this can be avoided if the problem is duly noticed during earlier stages. If the condition is observed in a child, it is better to treat the child during the formative years itself so that uncomfortable situations can be prevented in the future. Though it is relatively easier to treat a child in the primary school stage than the secondary school stage, it is not entirely impossible to treat the stuttering condition at the latter stage. Many activities and games can be organized to help stuttering children outgrow the problem. More than anything, a child needs the support and encouragement from its parents, teachers and the surrounding environment to overcome this problem. It is always advisable to treat the stuttering problem in a child as early as possible.
