I got to see the much talked-about movie Kaminey yesternight. I know it had been eons since it was released and it is rather late to review, but as they say better late than never I have a 5 month old kid at home, so watching movies at cinema-halls is out of the question. So despite compelling reasons like the rave reviews Kaminey received and the stuttering protagonist, I had to watch till the DVD came out to see this movie.
Now let’s handle the obvious question first and get it over with. How is stuttering shown in this movie – just as I like it, inconsequential in the larger scheme of things. The protagonist stutters but nobody minds this too much. He has a loyal, devoted girl-friend and people respect/disrespect him for what he is, not how he speaks.
Other than this, the movie is as masala as it gets, but it’s a masala masterpiece. It’s not a classic like Bhardwaj’s earlier movies Maqbool or Omkara; but it has a charm of its own. The ensemble of villains (Bengali, Marathi and Ladakhi) is to die-for, and the cop duo Lobo-Lele compliments them well. The movie runs in many parallel threads, and when they meet it’s a blast.
All-in-all a must watch.
