I plan to write down a lot more on this as my mind has often turned to this theme in last 50 years! There is a saying: fools repeat the same mistake. Intelligent guy makes the mistake only once. Wise people learn from OTHER'S experience.

So, very quickly, let me share these links to my posts on the subject:

But I also want to know from you: what do you think- can/ should there truly be a 'fast cure' for our stammering?

Hi,

I'd like to add my two cents here.

Not everyone claiming a fast cure is out to cheat you. One of the more respected ones is McGuire programme.

It is a well-respected, 4-days intensive therapy programme and thousands have benefited from it.

In fact TISA is also planning to have something on the similar lines.

Cheers

Nitin

Found something relevant on the theme of 'cure' from Keith's website..

"Leys Geddes [Vice Chair of the BSA 2008] said in an email today
“Some people who stutter may respond to these ads by going through to the advertisers’ websites and getting the ‘full’ story, but most will not, so they will be given the impression that the advertisers can ‘cure’ or eliminate’ stuttering, often within a very short period. And very few of the secondary audience I mentioned, people who don’t stutter, will click through to these websites. So they will continue to think that stuttering is no problem, because it can be cured in so many hours or days. Thus they will continue to trivialise the effects that stuttering has on the 720,000 children and adults in the UK - and the 3 million or so in the States, and the other stuttering millions around the world.”
Leys, from the UK, is now looking at advertisements in the USA."

I do not entirely agree with this. Programmes like McGuire and Lidcombe have been found to be quite helpful.

In my opinion, making stammerers aware about these is more important than thinking about what non-stammerers may conclude from that.

Cheers

I would suggest to avoid secondary symptom (atleast one), you can able to cure fast. I have noticed to myself that when ever I speak with others, I am straining my stomoch muscles. I am now trying to aviod this secondary symptom, I am speaking fairly well.

we can speak fluently when ever we are alone. If we observe closely to our body, we were not at all straining any part of our muscles. but the problem is to find out the secondary symptoms as it will vary from perso to person. But it is worth whileto try.
all the best.

I also think that McGuire programme is one of the best around the world and it has shown its results and proved it.However It is totally upon the person who is taking speech therapy and who is giving the speech therapy.

I want that we should also give the same kinda speech therapy that is given in McGuire programme and notice the results whether it is really working or not.

I have also read that there are some fear memories in our brain that becomes active when we are in a difficult situations and that leads us to stammer and some researchers have developed a method to erase those fear memories. I think it is yet to be tested on any individual. And if this thing happens then it will be the fastest and most effective method .

just imagine that you dont even remember that you stammer. It means that you are stammerer no more ....

M was here at samagra and we had a rollicking time of exploring our emotions, fears, memories and attitudes..We all had good time; Tough time as well as fun time, when you say- "Wow- that was easy! Why did I not try this for last twenty years?"
While parting, I just asked: Could we have done this same thing over an online session?
M reflected and said- NO.
The very act of catching a bus to destination X for an intensive course- is an act of coming out of your comfort zone. That very moment you have taken a life changing decision. "Therapy" has begun- but the "therapist" is you yourself.

Exactly same thing applies, when you pick up a phone and ask that question, which you have been postponing..When you get out and go to SHG.. When you ask a stranger about the bus. etc..

So, in one sense a "quick cure" is available - but only for the brave!
